Workplace instructions and safety vocabulary
Objectifs d’apprentissage
Understand common instructions used in a workplace.
Write a short, clear instruction using imperative forms.
Introduction
Clear workplace communication helps teams coordinate tasks and reduce avoidable risks.
Cours
Imperatives use the base form of the verb: Check the label, Wear protective equipment, or Keep the aisle clear. Use please to make routine requests more polite. Safety instructions should be direct, specific and unambiguous. Words such as before, after, until and unless clarify when an action is required. When a procedure is unfamiliar, ask a supervisor rather than guessing.
Exemples guidés
- “Switch off the machine before cleaning it.” The instruction identifies the action and when it must happen.
Exercices d’application
- Rewrite “You don't put boxes in the exit” as a clear safety instruction.
Correction
“Do not place boxes in the exit” or “Keep the exit clear.” The instruction uses a direct imperative and states the required action.
À retenir
Use a clear verb, identify the object or location, and state timing or safety conditions where necessary.
