Writing a coherent paragraph
Objectifs d’apprentissage
Write a clear topic sentence.
Support a main idea with relevant details and linking words.
Introduction
A strong paragraph develops one main idea in a logical order. The reader should understand the point, the supporting details and the final message.
Cours
A basic academic paragraph has a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. The topic sentence states the main idea. Supporting sentences explain, compare or give evidence and examples. Linking words show relationships: first and furthermore add points; however introduces contrast; because gives a reason; therefore signals a result. Keep pronouns clear, avoid switching tense without reason and remove sentences that do not support the main idea. After drafting, check subject–verb agreement, punctuation and repeated vocabulary.
