Writing a balanced argumentative essay

anglaisContenu pédagogique original

Objectifs d’apprentissage

Develop a clear thesis in response to a prompt.

Organize supporting arguments, counterarguments and a conclusion.

Introduction

An argumentative essay takes a position and supports it with reasons and relevant examples while considering alternative views.

Cours

Start by identifying the key terms in the prompt and choosing a position you can defend. The introduction gives context and states a focused thesis. Each body paragraph develops one claim, explains it and supports it with a concrete example or evidence. Represent a counterargument fairly before responding to it. Use linking expressions such as however, moreover, for example, therefore and in contrast to make the logic explicit. The conclusion synthesizes the reasoning rather than copying the introduction. Revise paragraph unity, verb tense, agreement, punctuation and word choice.

Exemples guidés

  1. Claim: public transport can reduce congestion. Reason: one bus can carry many passengers using less road space per person. Qualification: routes must be reliable and accessible.
  2. A counterargument is stronger when it addresses a plausible opposing view rather than an exaggerated one.

Activités d’apprentissage

  1. Turn a broad topic into a debatable thesis.
  2. Write a claim supported by a reason and a specific example.
  3. Add a fair counterargument and a response.

Exercices d’application

  1. Write a 180–220 word essay on whether digital tools improve learning, including one counterargument.
  2. Underline the thesis and label the function of each paragraph.

Correction

A strong response answers the prompt, maintains a clear position, develops distinct arguments, treats the opposing view fairly and uses transitions naturally. Different well-supported positions can earn full credit.

À retenir

State a defensible thesis, develop one claim per paragraph, support claims with examples, address a counterargument and revise for clarity.
