Finding the main idea and supporting details
Objectifs d’apprentissage
Identify the central idea of a short informational text.
Distinguish supporting details from examples and unrelated information.
Introduction
Effective reading requires separating the central message from the details that explain it.
Cours
The main idea expresses what a paragraph is mostly about. A topic is usually a word or short phrase, while a main idea makes a complete statement about that topic. Supporting details give reasons, facts or examples. Read the first and last sentences carefully, but check the whole paragraph because the main idea may appear elsewhere. A useful summary keeps the central idea and the most important supporting points without copying every sentence.
Exemples guidés
- Topic: school libraries. Main idea: School libraries support learning by giving students access to books, reference materials and quiet study space. Details might mention reading clubs, dictionaries or opening hours.
Exercices d’application
- Write a two-sentence summary of a short paragraph about healthy study habits.
Correction
A good answer states the paragraph's central message in one sentence and adds only details that directly support it; irrelevant examples should be omitted.
À retenir
Ask: what is the paragraph mostly saying? Then check whether each detail supports that message.
