Past simple and present perfect

anglaisContenu pédagogique original

Objectifs d’apprentissage

Choose between past simple and present perfect according to the time reference.

Form affirmative, negative and question structures accurately.

Introduction

English uses different verb forms to present a completed past event or an experience linked to the present.

Cours

Use the past simple for a finished action at a definite past time: I visited Fez last year. Use the present perfect (have/has + past participle) for experiences or past actions connected to the present when the exact finished time is not stated: I have visited Fez twice. Common finished-time expressions include yesterday and in 2022; ever, never, already and yet often appear with the present perfect, depending on meaning.

Exemples guidés

  1. She finished her homework yesterday. She has already finished her homework, so she can relax now.

Exercices d’application

  1. Choose the correct form: “I ___ (see) that film last week” and “I ___ (never/see) that film before.”

Correction

“I saw that film last week” uses a finished time. “I have never seen that film before” describes experience up to now.

À retenir

Check whether the time period is finished and whether the sentence focuses on a dated event or experience up to the present.
