Structuring an academic essay
Objectifs d’apprentissage
Organize an essay into an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.
Use topic sentences and evidence to support a clear argument.
Introduction
An academic essay is easier to follow when each paragraph has a clear purpose and supports the central argument.
Cours
The introduction introduces the issue and states a thesis. Each body paragraph develops one main point, usually beginning with a topic sentence, followed by explanation and evidence or an example. Linking expressions show contrast, cause or addition. The conclusion synthesizes the reasoning and returns to the thesis without simply copying the introduction. A balanced essay may acknowledge a counterargument and explain why the main position remains convincing.
Exemples guidés
- Thesis: School clubs benefit students. Paragraph 1 can explain teamwork; paragraph 2 can discuss time management; a counterargument may note the need to balance clubs with study.
Exercices d’application
- Write a topic sentence and two supporting details for a paragraph about learning a foreign language.
Correction
Possible topic sentence: “Learning a foreign language can expand students' opportunities.” Supporting details could discuss communication across cultures and access to further study; each should be explained rather than merely listed.
À retenir
One paragraph, one main point; connect evidence to the thesis and acknowledge relevant limitations.
