Writing a balanced argumentative essay
Objectifs d’apprentissage
Formulate a clear thesis in response to a prompt.
Organize arguments and counterarguments into coherent paragraphs.
Use linking expressions and examples to support a conclusion.
Introduction
An argumentative essay presents a position and supports it with reasons while acknowledging relevant opposing views.
Cours
A clear introduction establishes the issue and states the thesis. Each body paragraph develops one main claim, explains it, and supports it with a relevant example. Linking expressions show relationships: firstly, moreover, however, therefore and in conclusion. A counterargument should be represented fairly before it is answered. The conclusion synthesizes the reasoning rather than introducing a new major argument. Register, grammar and paragraph unity should remain consistent throughout.
Méthode guidée
Démarche : définir les notions, justifier chaque étape, puis vérifier que la conclusion répond précisément à la question « Writing a balanced argumentative essay ».
Exemple résolu pas à pas
From opinion to supported argument
Thesis: Schools should encourage community service because it connects classroom learning with local needs.
Reason: Learners practise responsibility and teamwork in real situations.
Example: A supervised reading activity at a local library gives students a concrete role.
Counterargument: It may compete with study time; a limited, planned schedule can reduce that problem.
Conclusion : The argument is balanced because it states a position, supports it and answers a plausible objection.

1. What does a thesis do?
It states the essay’s central position or answer to the prompt.
2. Why include a counterargument?
To acknowledge an opposing view and strengthen the reasoning by responding to it.
Correction
A strong response states a position, gives a relevant reason, develops it with an example and uses a linking phrase. For example, community service can build civic responsibility because learners practise cooperating with people outside their usual circle.
Corrigés des exercices d’application
- Exercice 1
A thesis is a specific answer to the prompt, not just a broad topic.
- Exercice 2
The counterargument should be answered with reasoning rather than dismissed.
