Developing a counterargument

anglaisContenu pédagogique original

Objectifs d’apprentissage

Present a counterargument fairly and respond to it logically.

Use contrast and concession markers accurately.

Introduction

A strong argument anticipates reasonable objections instead of ignoring them.

Cours

A counterargument presents a plausible reason someone might disagree with the thesis. A response can acknowledge the concern, limit its scope or explain why the main argument remains stronger. Expressions such as although, however, while and nevertheless help show contrast, but they should reflect a real logical relationship. Avoid presenting an exaggerated or weak version of the opposing position.

Exemples guidés

  1. “Although online resources can distract learners, carefully chosen materials can also provide immediate practice and feedback.”

Exercices d’application

  1. Add a counterargument and response to this claim: “Students should have regular reading time at school.”

Correction

Possible response: “Some may argue that reading time reduces time for other subjects; however, regular reading can also strengthen vocabulary and comprehension used across subjects.”

À retenir

Represent opposing views accurately, acknowledge their strongest point and explain the limits of the objection.
